Kakuro

How Kakuro works
- Write a digit from 1 to 9 in every white cell.
- Each clue is the total of the run of white cells next to it. The number above the diagonal is for the run going across to its right. The number below the diagonal is for the run going down.
- A digit can't appear twice in the same run. It can repeat elsewhere in the row or column, as long as a black cell separates the two.
Tap a white cell to select it, then type a digit or use the pad under the grid. The runs through that cell light up, and their clues turn yellow. Turn on Notes to pencil in small candidate digits. A clue turns red when its run has a repeated digit, goes over the total, or is full but adds up wrong.
A new kakuro puzzle appears here every day at midnight your time. Early in the week they're small and friendly. Later in the week they grow bigger and trickier. Want more? Unlimited Kakuro has as many puzzles as you like at four levels.
Questions
- Do I need to be good at maths?
- Not really. You only add small numbers, and after a few puzzles you'll know the common combinations by heart. The skill is logic: working out which digits fit where.
- Do I ever need to guess?
- No. Every puzzle has exactly one solution, and our solver checks that you can reach it step by step without guessing.
- What does Hint do?
- It shows the next cell you can fill and explains why, using the same reasoning as our techniques guide. If a digit you entered is wrong, it points that out first.
- Is kakuro like sudoku?
- They share the "no repeats" rule, but kakuro adds sums. It feels like a crossword made of numbers, which is why it's sometimes called Cross Sums.
